POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the operation of the hospital during an assigned shift; functions as an assistant to the Executive Director, Nursing Services, and has the authority to act on behalf of the Executive Director during periods of absence. Supervises the Float Team and Staffing Office personnel during on-duty hours and completes and/or provides input for staff performance evaluations. Coordinates patient bed assignments and staffing mix during an assigned shift. Serves as hospital spokesperson with media and other outside agencies when assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing required or a combination of education and directly related work exPerience. Masters degree in Nursing, Business or related field preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Current registration as an RN in the State of Washington; BLS Certified; ACLS certified

CONTINUING EDUCATION & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Required to maintain current licensure and certification in clinical specialty and provide a current copy to Administration immediately upon renewal. Must complete all mandatory hospital continuing education requirements and must maintain current certification in advanced life support. Knowledge and expertise in providing care to assigned population

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Minimum of four (4) years clinical experience in an acute care facility required. Previous management experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Knowledge of appropriate patient care techniques and procedures. Knowledge of and ability to model effective and appropriate nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations regarding patient care, safety and privacy. Knowledge of regulatory standards applicable to area of assignment. Knowledge of employee health and safety standards and regulations. Basic knowledge of cardiac rhythm and life-threatening arrhythmias, knowing the appropriate treatment of such situation. Ability to perform Identification of nursing diagnosis, development of plan, interventions and goals. Ability to serve as a role model for patient care techniques. Ability to competently utilize defibrillation, cardio-version and the administration of life saving medications when required. ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Supervises the work performance of the Float Team personnel and the Nursing Administrative Assistants. Oversees the operation of the hospital during assigned shift. Directs and assures delivery of quality nursing care. Develops short and long-term goals and objectives for the Float Team and Staffing Office personnel who promote the achievement of the hospital's goals and objectives. Coordinates with Patient Registration, ED and nursing units for appropriate assignment and utilization of hospital beds. Coordinates with Directors/Patient Care Services to ensure an appropriate number and mix of staff are scheduled for optimal operation of patient care. Receives daily report from Harrison Home Health, receives after-hour calls and refers, as appropriate. Provides emotional support, crisis intervention, and/or grief counseling for families in crisis; makes appropriate referrals. Responds to all codes and emergencies and coordinates activities during these situations. In cases of emergency, provide direct patient care. Acts as a resource person and role model when assistance is needed in solving patient care problems; investigates and follows the chain of command when handling situations where the appropriateness of patient care is in question. Functions as the administrative spokesman in the release of patient related information to the media, using the guidelines in the Hospital Press Guide. Ensures the safety, infection control, and employee health standards of Harrison Medical Center are consistently upheld. Develops contingency plans for unusual operating situations; identifies the need for changes or additions to current policies and procedures and submits written rationale and recommendations. Ensures patient care services policy and procedures manuals are up-to-date, useful for staff, and meet all able regulations and standards. Assumes a leadership role in both Nursing or interdisciplinary projects/plans, consistently promotes the objectives of the hospital mission statement. Meets standards of regulation/review for JCAHO & DOH licensing and represents Nursing Administration during site visits of regulatory agencies. Provides interpretation and rationale for hospital policies and procedures to staff, physicians and others. Provides smooth transition during change with support and rationale of plans developed by management Identifies behaviors requiring intervention, counsels staff, performs required documentation and determines action to be taken. Conducts and coordinates continuous quality improvement activities to ensure that the scope and operations of patient care services meets the mission of Harrison Medical Center. Contributes to annual plan (including community relations, marketing, and service excellence components. Assists in employee selection, orientation and performance evaluations for Float Team staff and Nursing Administrative Assistants. Participates in the planning of performance standards for nursing personnel. Actively participates in multi-disciplinary meetings and committees and provides leadership when appropriate.
